Robotic Pool Cleaner Winter Storage: Corded and Cordless Checklists

A pool robot’s winter routine depends on whether it is corded or battery-powered. Clean and drain it as directed, choose a protected storage location, and use the exact model’s battery instructions. A charging percentage copied from a different cleaner is not a universal rule.

Start with the model and storage period

Record the model, serial number and whether the cleaner will sit unused for weeks or months. Download the matching manual and locate storage temperature, charging and maintenance guidance. Keep that document with your purchase record and a photograph of the accessories.

Make two lists: work you can do through normal owner maintenance and issues that need a dealer. A damaged cable, charging connector or swollen battery belongs on the second list. Do not open a sealed drive or battery housing as part of seasonal cleaning.

Clean and dry before putting it away

Maytronics recommends cleaning the filter and removing retained water before off-season storage. Inspect accessible brushes, tracks and the basket while doing the documented cleaning. A clean unit makes damage easier to spot and avoids discovering a hardened debris load next spring.

For corded models, follow the maker’s cable-coiling and power-supply storage directions. For cordless models, clean and dry charging surfaces as specified. Put small accessories in a labeled container so the correct charger is easy to identify later.

Cordless storage is model-specific

For the Dolphin Liberty, Maytronics specifies at least 50% charge for extended storage, with the robot switched off and disconnected from its charger, in a sheltered place within its stated storage range. That is Liberty guidance, not a prescription for Beatbot, Aiper or another Dolphin family.

Write down your model’s actual requirement and any scheduled charge check. The same manufacturer publishes different procedures for different products. Keep the charger available but do not assume continuous connection is the correct off-season policy.

Use a seasonal record

A short record helps distinguish an old fault from something discovered after storage. This is also useful if someone else opens the pool next season.

Buying a new cleaner? Compare storage as well as cleaning

A cordless cleaner can remove the pool cable from the cleaning routine, but introduces battery care and charging logistics. A corded cleaner still needs space for its cable and power supply. Neither arrangement eliminates maintenance.

Before ordering, measure the storage footprint, check replacement-filter availability and ask about battery service if relevant. A cleaner that handles your pool well and has accessible support may be a better long-term choice than a newer model whose off-season requirements do not fit your home.

Restart deliberately

Before the first cycle, inspect the stored equipment and follow the documented charging and setup sequence. Confirm pool-water conditions fall within the cleaner’s allowed operating range. Stay available for the first run to check for abnormal behavior.

If the cleaner does not start or charge normally, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting process and provide the storage record. Repeated resets or an improvised charger can obscure the original issue. Storage checks support reliability; they do not guarantee a particular lifespan.
