Map the hard parts
List shelves, benches, sharp wall transitions, drains and steps. A product that cleans a rectangular floor may not handle shallow ledges or complex corners.
Measure the real pool
Use the pool floor area and longest dimension. Leave margin above your measured size rather than buying at the cleaner's absolute coverage limit.
Match the debris
Large leaves reward wide inlets and big baskets. Dust and pollen require finer filtration. One basket rarely excels at both without a secondary filter.

Measure the ledge before comparing robots
A tanning ledge is not simply another part of the pool floor. Record its water depth, width, transition to the main pool and any obstacles. Ask the manufacturer whether the exact cleaner supports that geometry and minimum operating depth. Wall-climbing or waterline cleaning on a specification sheet does not establish shallow-shelf coverage.
Request a model-specific answer that distinguishes reaching the ledge from cleaning it consistently. A demonstration in a conventional rectangular pool does not answer the question. If coverage remains unverified, plan a manual method for the ledge rather than treating a seller’s broad “full pool” description as a guarantee.
Keep the cleaning plan complete
Steps, benches and irregular corners can remain part of the manual routine even when a robot is useful elsewhere. Evaluate the main pool and these exceptions separately. A cleaner can still be worthwhile if its documented work reduces the larger task, but the purchase should not depend on unsupported coverage.
